Many people feel nervous about attending a new class for the first time. Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers, to put your mind at ease!
Q. I don't have anyone to come to the class with.
A. Most people come to class on their own. You very soon get to know people and make friends. The more experienced members are more than happy to help out new beginners. All our classes have a very friendly and positive atmosphere. We also have social events throughout the year.
Q. Does pole dancing have anything to do with lap dancing?
A.No. Pole dancing has moved on from its origins, and is a strenuous sport, with more in common with gymnastics than with stripping. All our classes are fitness based and don't get any sexier than your average Beyonce video.
Q.Will I have to do a solo performance under a spotlight?
A.No. You will never have to anything you don't want to. We work simultaneously on three poles, so you are never dancing on your own. In the more advanced classes I sometimes encourage people to perform a short dance in pairs, as part of their training, but this is entirely voluntary.
Q.I am overweight, shy and lack the self confidence to come to a class.
A. Rock and pole classes are precisely intended for people who don't feel that they fit 'the norm'. We are an eclectic group of looks, shapes, sizes and personalities. Pole dancing is the best thing you can do to increase your self esteem and confidence.
Q.What do I need to bring to the class?
A. All you need are trainers or ballet pumps for the warm up, heels or boots to dance in if you wish; and clothes you can exercise in. Shorts or a beach skirt are recommended, as bare thighs are best for gripping the pole during climbs and spins. However tracksuit bottoms are fine to start with, if you feel more comfortable.
Q.How will pole dancing improve my fitness?
A. This form of dance will dramatically increase your upper body strength and tone your arms. Your core stability and flexibility will improve and routines will give you a calorie burning, cardiovascular workout. Coordination and balance will be developed as you progress.
